Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to announce a booth showcase of Peter Gronquist’s work at UNTITLED, Art Miami 2021. Asylum Choir is a selection of work that explores the incandescent materiality of personal trauma and its lasting effects. Furthering his multidisciplinary background, Gronquist turns to sheet metal as his muse, exploding polished stainless-steel slabs with ammonium nitrate and manipulating the mangled, torqued remainders. Through forcing malleability into the form, Gronquist mirrors the transformative aspects of catastrophic events on the self. This residual damage is contained within his ghostly “Reflectoglyphs,” which capture exposed, reflected light from the dangling metal shapes. The brute physicality of the initial explosion gets sifted through phantasmic, gentle lines that optimistically offer a way forward from trauma. Sinuous, translucent forms convey a new version of the self. Internalized memories are contained within imperfect ripples that stick out like a faded scar blossoming into an emblem of resilience.
Peter Gronquist is a multi-disciplinary artist working in diverse mediums and materials ranging from video and painting to sculpture and site-specific installations in our natural and built environment. Throughout his career, he has employed aluminum, ceramic, paint, fabric, mirrors, basic lumber, LED lighting systems, and both virtual and augmented reality to challenge reductive notions of the traditional and modern. Based in Portland, Oregon, Gronquist draws inspiration from the pastoral sensibility and rural backdrop of the Pacific Northwest to create work inflected by a sense of rough poetry and impermanence.
