Atlanta-based painter Rana Rochat returns to Seattle with her second solo exhibition at Winston Wächter Fine Art. Rana Rochat’s encaustic paintings explore a spontaneous abstraction based on an intuition and instinct. Each seeks a fragile balance between order and chaos, with non-specific forms and shapes moving through the painting field.
Rochat’s works have neither a foreground nor background, but rather exist as their own transparent and luminous environment. Her marks and gestures move through space in a “stream of consciousness” approach that reminds one of a novel, where bits and pieces of imagery are layered and revealed throughout.
Within an environment of deep light and color, Rochat creates an experience that is pre-verbal, promoting pictorial awareness before language or narrative has processed the visual information. There is a freshness to Rochat’s paintings, allowing the viewer a chance to let their imaginations wander as they follow the circuitous lines meandering in and around the fields, washes and points of color.
