Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to present Orange, Violet, a solo exhibition of new work by Mary Finlayson. Known for her vibrant palette and richly patterned compositions, Finlayson explores the emotional architecture of interior spaces, turning domestic settings into evocative portraits of memory, identity, and belonging.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Corita Kent, Henri Matisse, and Stuart Davis, Finlayson’s paintings pay homage through bold colors, rhythmic patterns, and flattened forms. Yet her work remains distinctly her own. Her intimate, stylized environments radiate with personal resonance and narrative weight. Each composition, while simplified in form, unfolds as a complex visual map of emotion and memory.

Finlayson’s work is rooted in a deep investigation of what “home” means, both as a lived space and an imagined ideal. She transforms familiar interiors into vivid recollections, often distorting scale, perspective, and proportion to emphasize feeling over realism. In these spaces, couches float, staircases curve unexpectedly, and decorative objects hum with symbolic meaning. They are not reconstructions of reality but deeply felt impressions, spaces remembered and reimagined.

Orange, Violet invites viewers to step into a world where everyday spaces become stages for emotion, memory, and personal history.

Finlayson completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University in Kingston Ontario, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute as well an Arts Education Degree from the University of British Columbia. She completed artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center as well as OTIS College in LA and recently completed a mural at the Facebook Artist in Residence program in San Francisco, CA. She has created work for Asana, Mohawk, Google, and Anthropologie.
