The abstract photography of Aaron Leitz's Homage series explores color relationships through interpolations and reinventions of Josef Albers' famous 'Homage to the Square' paintings. Creating photographs directly informed by the materiality of paint, Leitz engages with the supposed 'reality' of the captured image and its constraints; bold, translucent shades of stark colors sit atop each other in pure abstraction, complicating notions of objective representation. Oftentimes appearing slightly coarse in texture, Leitz achieves a vast range of elemental and unorthodox color combinations. The series of work combines the emotional qualities of painting with the technical limitations and inherent qualities of photography.
