Aaron Leitz is a Seattle-based photographer whose work explores the conceptual boundaries of the captured image. Drawing upon a wide range of art history that includes Dutch vanitas paintings, Albers and Rothko, Leitz’s work combines the technical fidelity of photography with an emotional and unorthodox play of light found in painting. Foregoing traditional models of representational imagery, Leitz manipulates the camera to surrealist, calming effect. Compositions are filled with evocative, simplified forms often heavily removed— or even detached— from a discernible reality. Much like the minimalists and abstract expressionists before him, Leitz’s photographs express an emotional weightiness beyond the physical.
“I find these constraints liberating and ripe for experimentation and by combining abstraction and realism in ways that only a camera can, I hope to create photographs that reinterpret the familiar in ways that spark curiosity, reflection, and joy.”
In addition to his conceptual photography, Aaron Leitz works as a commercial photographer for interior designers and architects throughout the country. He is currently based in Seattle.
