Kandis Susol’s encaustic paper sculptures engage with the inherent complexity of all of life’s imperfections. Each unique, handmade sheet creates a dialogue with the next, both highlighting and obscuring certain inconsistencies while flowing together as a cohesive unit. These differences inform our own placement in the world. Taken together, the wax-coated papers ripple and dance with a tension that fluctuates with every new perspective.

Susol’s latest body of work incorporates the concept of dendrites— multi-branching crystals which receive input from neurons and carry those signals to the cell body— into her encaustic sculptures. Commonly found in snowflakes and minerals, dendrites symbolize an energy that sends out impulses and grows radially within Susol’s work, furthering her exploration of flowing connectivity. She in invites us into moments of calm, where we can reflect on what is sacred, and how we relate and inform one another and our surroundings.

Susol has studied fiber arts, paper making and encaustics throughout her career. She has exhibited at the Bellevue Arts Museum and the San Juan Islands Museum of Art, as well as numerous exhibitions throughout the Northwest.
