Berndnaut Smilde

Berndnaut Smilde creates surreal photographs by fabricating temporary cloud formations in architectural and external spaces. Each formation is unique and develops based on the conditions added to that specific environment. The immediate reaction of disbelieve is quickly replaced with sense of wonder for these anthropomorphized cloud forms. His images are intentionally devoid of objects, removing any sense of time, leaving only the photograph to document the event. By manipulating nature and placing a recognizable imagery in an unnatural setting, he asks us to question our preconceived notions of the world around us and our relationship with it.

Berndnaut Smilde was born in 1978 in Groningen, The Netherlands. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam. Smilde holds an MA from the Frank Mohr Institute, Groningen.
