Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to announce our upcoming solo exhibition with German-based artist Andreas Kocks. This body of work, Reading the Air, explores the intersection of drawing and sculpture, using the simple yet profound act of cutting forms with a blade. The line, a central motif, becomes more than a mere mark on the surface; it transforms into a dynamic force that shapes space, dividing and creating contrasts between inside and outside, positive and negative, cutouts and solid forms. Both aspects are equally important, reflecting the tension and balance inherent in the artist's process.
In these new works, the artist sought to capture the delicacy of lines by translating the drawings into a more robust medium: metal. The result is a series of works that can be mounted directly on the wall, eliminating the need for traditional framing. This decision invites the artwork to merge with its environment, allowing the wall to become an integral part of the composition, further accentuating the contrast between the organic, flowing shapes of the works and the rigid orthogonal lines of the architectural space.
The exhibition invites a direct, intimate dialogue between the artwork, its locale, and the viewer. The carefully chosen materials and forms reflect the artist’s intention to engage with the space on a visceral level. The reflective, almost mirror-like surfaces of the works invite contemplation and interaction, drawing the viewer into a deeper relationship with the piece and its surroundings.
Born in Oberhausen, Germany, Andreas Kocks received his MFA in sculpture from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His work has been featured in museum exhibitions worldwide including the Museum of Art and Design in New York, Manchester Art Museum, England, the Museum August-Macke-Haus in Bonn, Haus der Kunst Munich, Germany, and the Kerawa Art Museum in Helsinki, Finland. In 2006 Kocks was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation fellowship. His work has been written about in numerous publications, including Art in America, Architectural Digest, Kunstforum, Time Out, Platinum Magazine and Financial Times. After living in New York for over a decade, Andreas is currently living and working in Munich, Germany.
